"Otober, 1897, THE METAL WORKER, (page 79): The Howard Horizontal Tubular Heater. A warm air heater of novel construction, simple in its arrangement of parts and provided with the most economical and labor saving attachments, has just been brought out by the Howard Furnace Company of Syracuse, N. Y. The body is made in cylindrical form, corrugated, the lower part forming the ash pit, the middle section the fire pot, which extends the entire length of the heater, and the upper section the dome. At the rear end of the heater a connection is made with the tubular radiator, which surmounts the body, and through which the products of combustion pass to the front and thence escape to the smoke pipe.

The radiator is made of a series of Scinch boiler tubes, the combined area of which is equal to the area of the smoke pipe, so as to insure the positive use of every tube, with the resulting utilization of all the radiating surfaces. The broken view of the heater which we present in the accompanying illustration gives an idea of the general arrangement of parts. It will be seen that there are three rows of tubes one above the other, so arranged that the air to be warmed is obliged to pass in a circuitous manner between the tubes, which are 1 inch apart.

In making the radiator, as well as other parts of manufacturers inform us that three larger sizes are in course of construction, and will be ready next spring. Every Howard furnace has a special brush for cleaning the radiator, a sanitary porcelain lined vapor pan and the Howard patent silver aluminum damper regulator with tested thermometer."
